“I am going to Timbuktu , what am I taking with me ?” I remember playing this game in school,3rd Grade. But never really knew where Timbuktu is.
At a one point I really wanted to find out.
Timbuktu is located in Mali. If you have guessed it was in Africa , you might not have known about its splendor and history. It was founded by Maghsharan Tuareg, according to the historian Abdur Rahman Al Sadi.
The Tuareg people come from Africa: Libya to Mali. They are Muslim semi -nomads of Berber origin ,from North Africa, We many times ignore Africa, since we are taught to think history through the filter of secular British history
Timbuktu was a city well known for its gold. A city like El Dorado. But this city is real.
Mansi Musa, who is this guy. He is the richest guy ever lived ,yes even richer than Bill Gates.
The fortune of Mansi Musa was estimated to be 400 $billion in todays time. He was the King of the Mali Empire from 1312.
King Mansi Musa passed through Egypt Cairo whilst going for hajj. He travelled about 4000 miles wearing Persian silk and carrying golden staffs.
His Hajj Journey is to be noted since it caused Cairo gold crash!
Accompanying Mansi Musa were:
- 60,000 men
- 12000 slaves
- 100 camels carrying hundreds of pounds of gold.
This tour caused price of gold to drop and middle east suffered 1.5 Billion dollars in setback.
He donated in charity as well. The establishment of university is supposed to be the earliest or one of the earliest.
Sankore Madrasah or masjid is one of the seats of learning in mali.
His ancestor Sundiata Keita founded the Mali Empire from 1235 CE to 1255 CE.
Timbuktu was known for its religious learning. Out of 100,000 population ,25,000 were scholars. One of the most famous scholar from Timbuktu was Ahmed Baba. There were 700,000 manuscripts in Timbuktu.
One the oldest university in Timbuktu was University of Sancore,known as Sankore Madrasah.
